For the past 32 years family law has been the great professional joy of my life. While I do not make my clients's problems, I am usually able to make those problems better, preferably by settling their cases or, if settlement is impossible, by litigation. In Virginia, we are fortunate to have interested and objective hard working judges, appreciated by me and my clients.

Over all the years I have been fortunate to have had cases in many Circuits of the Commonwealth, and have never been limited to any geographic area. I have tried cases in numerous Circuit Courts, and many Juvenile & Domestic Relations District Courts. I have handled many appeals to the Virginia Court of Appeals. My cases have involved virtually every issue arising out of family law, including same-sex marriage issues, high asset divorces and complex custody matters. I have successfully participated in countless mediations and voluntary settlement conferences over all the years. I have been able to negotiate settlements in more than 90 percent of all my cases; in my view, the only "won" case is a settled case -- because if one side substantially prevails at trial, the other side has an appeal of right to the Virginia Court of Appeals in a divorce case, and the litigation becomes endless.

I have been involved in international family law cases, primarily cases with a Virginia connection between the Commonwealth and the United Kingdom.

I have been a fellow of the International Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers for more than 22 years, and was the President of the United States Chapter of the Academy for two years, 2008-2010. In the course of my involvement with this international academy, I have presented seminars on various family law topics to international attorneys in many foreign countries, including premarital agreements and the status of Virginia law pertaining to same-sex marriage.

I have also been a certified fellow of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers for more than 25 years. For the past five years I have been a member of the Academy's Amicus Committee, and participated in the Academy's Amicus brief submitted to the U.S. Supreme Court during the Court's consideration of the two prior cases out of which the present same-sex marriage questions being considered by the Court arose.

I have also presented seminars on various family law topics to legal groups all over the Commonwealth from time to time over the past 30 years.

I have been listed in The Best Lawyers in America (Family Law) for many years. I was listed among the top 25 female lawyers in Virginia in the Virginia Super Lawyers Magazine, and was featured on the cover of the magazine in 2013. I have been listed among Virginia's "Super Lawyers" every year since 2006.

I began practicing family law as an associate to Betty A. Thompson, who taught me family law for ten years. I established my own firm 22 years ago, and am the founding partner of Maddox & Gerock, P.C.

I am a graduate of Smith College and received my J.D. (cum laude) from the Washington College of Law, American University. Before I went to law school, I was an Assistant Press Secretary to Mrs. Lyndon B. Johnson at the White House for the five years that Mr. Johnson was President. Skills I learned from those White House years, during which I arranged and organized virtually every one of Mrs. Johnson's trips as First Lady, meeting with representatives of foreign governments as well as numerous Governors and Mayors, have helped me negotiate and/or present the hundreds if not thousands of cases I have handled over the years.

I have two daughters, Katharine W. Maddox who is one of my law partners, and Jennifer Sergent, the mother of my two grandsons.
