The positive changes that can come from divorce

Divorce generally signals a dark time in a person’s life. Many people who are facing the end of a marriage feel as if their life is over, that they are a failure, or that they will never find love again. With all the negativity that divorce gets, there are many who feel as if divorce liberates them. They no longer are chained to a difficult marriage and they are free to be themselves.

With that, there are a number of positives that come out of divorce. This post will highlight a few.

Self-awareness can improve for the better – For some, divorce can increase their sense of self-awareness, so that they can be satisfied with being alone, or that they are not responsible for another person’s happiness. More importantly, they can be more aware of what makes them happy, and can find someone who has similar interests and goals.

Wisdom and empathy – The old adage, “what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger” applies here. Some divorcees will emerge wiser and more empathetic about their family members and significant others.

Confidence can grow – Being able to fix appliances, deal with creditors and negotiate loans on your own is empowering. This can also come with not depending on a spouse who keeps you in a bubble.

Trouble is only temporary – After going through a divorce, most people find that the experience was not as bad as they imagined it in their heads at the beginning, and that the emotional trauma was only temporary.  They were soon able to move on and live life the way they wanted.

In the midst of positive change, it is helpful to have an experienced family law attorney to help you avoid legal pitfalls. If you have questions about how a skilled lawyer can help, we invite you to contact us.
