3 tips for same sex couples going through divorce

Unfortunately, LGBT couples who decide to marry are just as susceptible to going through a divorce as heterosexual couples. Marriage is always complex, and divorce is fraught with a variety of complications, including dividing assets, figuring out support payments and determining custody.

You may be worrying about preparing and protecting yourself if you and your partner choose to part ways. Here are some tips for getting through a same-sex breakup.

1. Do not let your negative emotions rule you

Divorce is the perfect opportunity for your inner demons to come out. The end of your marriage may bring about confusion, self-doubt, anger and fear. If you let these feelings dictate your decisions, it will only make divorce and your life, in general, more difficult. Instead, make choices based on what is best for your life.

2. Live a life you are proud of

Remember that you deserve to be happy with your life and decisions. If your marriage and impending divorce are making you miserable, look forward to what you can build after the process is over. Think about how amazing it feels to authentically be yourself. Commit yourself to living a new life according to a higher purpose.

3. Do not go through this alone

Always remember that there are professionals who exist to assist you throughout your divorce, including the following:

  • An attorney
  • Mediators
  • Therapists
  • Financial analysts

Develop a support team who will deal with the complexities of ending your marriage. Additionally, make sure you reach out to supportive friends and family. You deserve as much emotional, legal and financial support as you can get right now. You may want to isolate yourself instinctively, but fight this urge. Surround yourself with people who want to help instead.

As you deal with the end of your marriage, prioritize your wellbeing. While you will worry about who gets the home, car or collectible items, your happiness is most important.
