Timberlake’s marriage illustrates importance of lifestyle clauses

On Behalf of | Dec 12, 2019 | Divorce, Divorce

If you follow celebrity news at all then you know that the marriage between famed singer Justin Timberlake and actress Jessica Biel may be on the rocks. Reports indicate that Timberlake was recently seen at a bar with a co-star of an upcoming film, with the two of them apparently holding hands and otherwise acting as if they are in some sort of romantic relationship.

Even for those who don’t follow celebrity news, the story serves as an illustration of the importance of a prenuptial agreement because Timberlake’s actions, if indeed classified as infidelity, could be costly.

Timberlake and Biel married back in 2012 and, at that time, some attention was given to their prenuptial agreement. One reason was because the agreement apparently contained a provision that would force Timberlake to pay a significant amount of compensation to Biel in the event that he cheated on her. Considering Timberlake’s significant wealth, it will be interesting to see how this story plays out. Of more importance, though, is how these lifestyle clauses can play a role in everyday Virginians’ lives.

Lifestyle clauses can address a variety of issues within the confines of a prenuptial agreement. As mentioned above, they often specify what will happen in the event of infidelity. In other instances, though, these clauses will address the frequency with which certain acts will be carried out and even things like each partner’s bodyweight. Individuals can get creative with these clauses to ensure that they have the certainty they need to confidently proceed with marriage, although there is some question over how such clauses might hold up in the event of a divorce

However, with prenuptial agreements, as with other family law matters, the details are of crucial importance. If a prenuptial agreement is improperly drafted, then it can set an individual up for failure because the agreement may be deemed unenforceable.

Therefore, those who are interested in utilizing a prenuptial agreement, whether with or without so-called lifestyle clauses, may want to sit down with their family law attorney to make sure they are operating within the confines of the laws and in a way that their soon-to-be-spouse can stomach.
