Today, the Supreme Court of the United States agreed to hear four new cases regarding same-sex marriage. The case will be argued this April and a decision is expected in June. The Court will hear argument on two issues:
1. Does the Fourteenth Amendment require a state to license a marriage between two people of the same sex?
2. Does the Fourteenth Amendment require a state to recognize a marriage between two people of the same sex when their marriage was lawfully licensed and performed out-of-state?
The Court is poised to address an issue that is at the core of America’s debate on marriage and family life. A majority of Americans live in states where same-sex couples can wed. At this time, same-sex couples can wed in 36 states and in the District of Columbia.
